Bikepacking 2025 - Utrecht to Woudrichem

Today's Route

Route So far

Travelogue

To add a visit to Utrecht to our trip, we'd detoured from our original route, which involved following Eurovelo EV15. To get to today's campsite, back on the original route, rather than retrace our steps back to where we'd left EV15, we cycled directly to Woudrichem, mostly following canals, and only rejoined EV15 when we got there.

The route we followed was pleasant enough, although there was a large motorway bridge we had to cross at one point. But there was little that was special about it.

That said, M1 added to his bird watching life list by photographing and identifying a Purple Heron! We've seen lots of Grey Herons on this trip and didn't even know there was such a thing as a Purple Heron until today.

To get to Woudrichem, we first cycled to Gorinchem on the other side of the Boven Merwede river. We then had a choice of cycling downstream and crossing by a big bridge or taking a ferry directly to Woudrichem. We chose the latter. We like ferries.

We're now camped.

Evening

We decided to go for a walk along the shore after dinner.

On turning left out of the campsite, heading for the river, M2 (who is moo-cow-phobic) was alarmed to spy a moo cow lurking in the bushes, watching her with its (her words) "beady moo cow eyes". M1 reassured her by pointing out the flimsy..... I mean sturdy fence that was keeping said beady-eyed moo cow away.

After a short walk, we found ourselves by the river. It had a wonderful mix of sandy beaches and large, lush reed beds. We sat and watched the vessels go by, mostly freight carriers although there was one small sailing dinghy. One vessel in particular caught our eyes. It was like a clunky metal box, not remotely streamlined and was incredibly low in the water. We were amazed when it didn't sink right in front of us!

We watched birds dip into the waters, but never saw any signs of success. It was a relaxing way to spend time as the sun got lower in the sky.

We eventually headed back to the campsite. We have only one more night of camping left in this trip after tonight.
