It's a second rest day in Utrecht! Hey, after cycling more than 1500 miles / 2400 km and being ahead of schedule, we deserve it. And yesterday was spent walking around the city and canoeing around the canals so it was hardly your classic rest day where you.... rest!
We did have one thing to do today though. M2 must find and buy the perfect souvenir of Utrecht.
"Perfect" needs a little explaining in this context. At home, M1 and M2 have a series of shelves upon which souvenirs of their travels are proudly displayed. But there are rules regarding souvenir selection that are almost like a religion. Don't ask too many questions. Disengage rational, critical thinking. Have faith and go with it. Because, you see, souvenirs must be tacky.
But what does tacky look like? It's an indefinable quality. You know it when you see it. And how do M1 and M2 ensure that the tackiness rule is always respected?
M2 polices M1's choices and vice versa. We're normally telepathically linked and both know immediately what we should buy when browsing at the altar of the souvenir, the Souvenir Shop. But every now and again, one of us strays precariously close to selecting something of quality. Something that might almost be called classy. It's then that the other M steps in and vetos the purchase.
So, once again, we walked into old Utrecht and found a suitable souvenir shop. In no time at all and with no controversy, we'd selected and bought a small, low quality model of the Utrecht Dom Tower. And yes, it's tacky!
We were excited by our addition to the ever-growing souvenir collection and decided that it was our duty to buy cakes for with our lunch. So we did. Cinnamon buns of various types, in fact. One with pistachios for M2 and one with pecans and caramel for M1.
And that's probably it for today :-)
