Today's Route

Route So far

Travelogue

We left our Koblenz apartment at about 9:00 this morning. With only a short 35 miles / 57 km to cycle, we were not in a rush.

We're no longer in the middle Rhine valley so it's less scenic and there are not quite so many castles here (but there are a few). But it is still more than nice enough when outside of the small towns. Much of today's ride was on a path right next to the Rhine so it was good to see the river, its wildlife, the enormous barges that transport all sorts of things and a few of those ubiquitous river cruise boats.

Bird of the day was without question, the cormorant. We saw a good few of them today.

Little of particular note happened, which is probably a good thing overall! Yes, we stopped for coffee. Yes, at one point the route was closed with no information and we had to loop back on ourselves and go around. And yes, a couple of times we had to push our bikes down steep flights of stairs using the integral ramp which is there for exactly that purpose.

Our campsite is by the Rhine although we can't see it from where we're camped. It's mostly motor homes rather than tents at this site but they have reserved a small, shady area for tents and that's where we are. There's also a bar that sells delicious German alcohol free beer, which M1 has been enjoying very much.

We planned the remainder of our six weeks (plus a few days) trip yesterday and we're ahead of schedule. Consequently, aside from visiting Utrecht, which was not originally planned, we're slowing down. Hence the short ride. Hence the additional rest day we'll be having the day after the tomorrow.

The weather today was mostly overcast but the sun did break through occasionally. Solar energy has brought M1's power bank back up to 95% and there's still time left for it to rise a little further. This is good because the forecast for the next few days is for rain.

That's it!
