Travelogue
Today's weather forecast was for heavy rain. We set off while it was still dry,. wondering if we'd make it to Cologne before the downpour started.
There wasn't much of interest to see in this stretch of the Rhine. The best of Germany is almost certainly behind us now as we enter an increasingly urban and industrial part of the country.
It started to drizzle lightly. And then a little harder. Then harder still until we were cycling in drenching but still fine drizzle.
We were cycling along a quiet road, set back from the river, when we both heard a siren. Looking at our phones, we discovered it was in fact an emergency alert sent by the mobile network, announcing that there was a fire somewhere. We asked a local and he told us it was 20 km away, so there was nothing for us to worry about.
Cologne announced itself via a number of bridges across the Rhine, the city getting nearer and nearer.
On entering the city, we discovered it was Pride day and the parade would pass through soon.
It's a Sunday so that can mean difficulties in finding food. We'd researched supermarkets yesterday and found an Aldi that was supposedly open. We detoured off our route and cycled a few blocks away from the river to find it. We found it and.... It was closed, as were all other supermarkets apparently. Oh well.
We had toasted bagels for lunch and then cycled to the route of the Pride parade. There were a lot of people walking that way which made it both easier and harder.
Having watched some of the parade, we cycled past the cathedral to our apartment, around the corner.
Tomorrow's a rest day which we'll use to look at whatever highlights Cologne has to offer.
Update: the parade route runs right by our apartment so we stepped out of our front door to watch. We almost caused a young woman who was leaning on it drinking her beer to fall over in the process. We all laughed :-)
