Travelogue
We did our best to restrain ourselves today on this, our second and final rest day before we get back on the bikes and continue west. But we still walked about 5 miles this afternoon. The reason? The lure of food and more specifically, of pintxos.
Pintxos are a kind of snack, served in bars and a Basque speciality. They're sometimes compared with tapas. We went to a pintxos bar that was recommended by our Airbnb host and seems to be well liked according to reviews in various places, such as on Google Maps. It's called Bar Paco Bueno and it specialises in fried shrimp, or gambas.
We walked to the old town, found the bar and managed to squeeze in and find a place at the bar. The various snacks are all on display under glass which in some ways makes ordering easier as you can just point, assuming that is, you can get close enough. The place is popular!
We started by ordering the famous gambas. A small plate with two deep-fried shrimp in crispy batter each quickly arrived. And they were tasty. It's probably the batter that added the slightly sweet flavour but whatever it was, we liked them very much. Next we ordered tortilla. In other parts of Spain, tortilla seems to usually be a small omelette or piece of omelette, usually with potato in it. This tortilla combined egg with cheese and was served on a small piece of bread. It too was nice but not in the same class as the gambas. So we did the only thing anyone could do in this situation. We ordered more gambas.
We had no idea what this was all costing. Feeling quite full already, we decided not to be gluttons (there were biscuits and chocolate back at the apartment we were reserving the gluttony for!) and asked to pay. M2 guessed the bill would be 23 Euros. M1 agreed it would be somewhere in the twenties. But no, it was a mere thirteen Euros. A bargain. No tourist prices at work here.
We picked up a few things at a supermarket on the way back, including a can of olives stuffed with anchovies, a Spanish treat that we both like.
That's it for today. Blogging done. Leftfield playing in headphones. Rest and relaxation mode engaged.
The first portion of gambas was eaten too quickly for a photo to be taken! |
