Travelogue

Today is the first of two consecutive rest days, here in San Sebastian. So what did we do by way of rest? We walked ten and a half miles, obviously.

San Sebastian is a very photogenic location and we couldn't miss the opportunity to wander through the old town and along the sea front.

There are two bays, each with its own beach. In between the two there's a headland on which the old town is largely located. We walked along the first of the two bays to the old town where we stopped for coffees in one of the many bar/restaurants there.

M2 wanted to visit the cathedral which was nearby, so we did. It wasn't much to write home about to be honest. Where was all the art, gold and jewels? Isn't that what the best places of worship are all about?

At the far end of the second and largest of the two bays, there's a funicular that goes up the side of a very steep hill. We expected we'd be rewarded with excellent views from the top. So, we made that our next destination and started walking. The second bay is very pretty with a large monument on top of a hill at the eastern end of the bay, giving it a slight Rio de Janeiro feel. In between the two ends of the bay, there's a small island. And at the westerly end where we were walking, there are some attractive houses and the funicular itself. At the top of the hill there's a hotel, an amusement park and viewing points.

We bought tickets for the funicular and didn't have to queue too long.

At the top, we were pleased to find that the amusement part was closed. This left us free to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and the spectacular views.

We walked back to the apartment, had lunch and now we are finally resting our poor legs!
