Travelogue
We started today's cycling with a thoroughly enjoyable ride through about 10 miles of forest. This was a forest of both evergreen trees and deciduous trees, including oaks. Not surprisingly, as they're credited with burying and then forgetting many acorns and thus being responsible for many new oak trees, the bird of the day was the Jay. A good many of the colourful member of the crow family were seen flying between trees.
The edge of the forest was close to the coast and sometimes we passed large sand dunes. On emerging from one part of the forest onto a road, we turned to briefly detour and visit a large lighthouse, one of several we saw today.
At the town of Royan, we had coffees in a restaurant as we awaited the next ferry to take us across the Gironde estuary. We boarded an hour later and sat in the cafe area below deck during the 25 minute crossing.
We disembarked and continued our journey, cycling alongside an old railway line through more lovely forest. Eventually, we reached the town of Soulacs-sur-mer and detoured to a LIDL supermarket for provisions. We bought enough for today and to get us through tomorrow just in case we can't find a shop open, it being a Sunday tomorrow.
From there we continued to our campsite. It's a very large campsite set in the forest. It's not got that many guests and so is fairly quiet. There's a bar opposite the campsite and we enjoyed drinks and crepes there this evening, reading our books and relaxing for a while.
That's it for today. Tomorrow is another day.
