Travelogue

Today, we're basically in a holding pattern awaiting our ferry to Dover tomorrow morning.

After breakfast we decided we needed some fresh air. But with around 5,000 feet ascent over about 95 miles to be cycled in the next two days, resting our legs was a priority and so clearly, going for a hike as we had done in Cap Gris-Nez was out of the question. So, no hiking. But what about a walk? We debated the difference between hike and walk for a while and failed to reach a conclusion other than that a walk was also probably a bad idea. M1 suggested a stroll. M2 thought ambling sounded like a safer bet. M1 countered with the suggestion that they saunter instead.

By mid-morning, we'd exhausted the synonyms for walk and decided to stop thinking and just get out there and go for a wander. Wander! Why hadn't we thought of that two hours ago?!

Our wandering feet lead us to a local park, not far away. It contains the Citadelle de Calais which turned out to be the perfect destination for a short wander on a sunny but windy day.

We picked up some groceries on the way back to the apartment, including two Cheeses of the Day which we enjoyed with fresh bread and (just for a change), tomatoes.

The orange coloured cheese is Mimolette. It's quite hard, somewhat salty and definitely tasty. Passendale is very mild and unfortunately, a little bland. All good though. Cheese is cheese or as the French doubtless say to each other every day, Fromage est Fromage. #cheesewisdom

There's been little done for the remainder of the day, which was in fact the goal in the first place. We reviewed our route home through England and decided it looked OK. We know where we need to go on our bikes to get into the Port of Calais. All will be well (with a bit of luck!).

Our last evening in France. Oh my.
