Travelogue
We were on the road before 7:00 this morning. We were awake. It was drizzling. And so we thought..... "let's go!".
It being dense drizzle, we donned our waterproofs and they did their job admirably.
The drizzle came and went during the day. There was a bit of a wind, and the roads were hilly and occasionally steep. We both had to wake up pretty quickly! But mostly, the roads were quiet country lanes, showing us parts of Kent that you would never see if travelling by car.
There are so many lovely houses and many oast houses, some in their original state and some converted into homes.

We even saw the sunshine once! And it was so warm, this prompted the shedding of at least some of the waterproof gear, using a bus stop as a handy changing area.
M2 demonstrated the remarkable strength of her legs on many occasions today, including here, powering up the ramp to the top of a bridge over a motorway. On other occasions, both M1 and M2 used zig-zagging to soften the steeper gradients. It's almost like we've done this kind of thing before!
We saw a curious monument near to Hythe. I'll find out what it was and update the blog with details at some point.
Even nearer to Hythe, we encountered and crossed the Royal Military Canal, and our route ran fairly close to it all the way into Hythe.
The countryside nearer to Hythe changes in character, and looks like it might have been wetlands at one point. Whatever its background, it's pretty.
In Hythe, we stopped for a very welcome lunch of toasted cheese and onion sandwiches, crisps and salad. Every morsel was cleared from our plates! Yes, cycling makes you hungry.
From Hythe, it's an easy (i.e. flat!) ride along the sea front, to Folkestone. We were not attacked by a single seagull either, which is a definite plus!
We're now camped on the cliffs above Folkestone at a campsite called Little Switzerland. It's nothing like Switzerland, but it's still pretty nice, with great views. It was tough cycling up from the town on very steep roads, but worth it in the end! We have another early start planned tomorrow, with a ferry to Calais to catch, so we're in full rest mode now for the remainder of the day.
