Travelogue
Today was a good day. We'd left behind industrial Germany towards the end of yesterday's ride. The attractive rural surroundings continued today, with plenty of wildlife to keep us entertained.
Amongst the critters seen today was a red squirrel, numerous white storks, grey herons, a spoonbill (new species for M1's life list), a number of enormous hares, horses, cows, sheep and cute goats. Weirdly, we noticed that many of the goats had beards and that every one of those beards was in the style known as the goatee. Of all the styles each goat could have chosen! What are the odds?!
We crossed an international border just over half way to our destination and we're now in the Netherlands! Having crossed the border, we had no choice but to celebrate and almost immediately a cafe that specialises in ice cream appeared. And like I said, we had no choice.
After ice cream, we rolled down the path the the edge of the river and boarded the first of two ferries to take us to the other side.
Apart from the almost obligatory headwind, the ride from here was enjoyable, passing along good paths through countryside and small towns. We passed through the small city of Arnhem, too.
The final stages involved cycling through some lovely forest.
Eventually, after stopping at Lidl for provisions, we arrived at today's campsite which is set within a farm. The are lots of cows and horses are in an enclosure right next to where we've camped. They trotted over when we arrived in the hope of being given sugarlumps (presumably) but were disappointed.
We're the only tent and there are only a few vans. The sun is shining. It's time for some yummy camping mush.
