Travelogue
We followed our Alpine climb of yesterday with.... another climb in the Alps. About 1 km from the campsite, we turned right and commenced a 10 km climb from Andermatt up to the start of the Oberalp Pass. With yesterday's climb still "in our legs", it was tougher than it would otherwise have been. But we made it.
At the top we had coffee and pastries at a handy hotel by the lake.
We then sped down the Oberalp Pass. This was one of the most thrilling and scenic mountain descents that M1 has ever done. Absolutely wonderful. M2 liked it as well but mostly because downhill is not uphill!
We'd formed the impression that after this climb, it was basically going to be downhill all the way to the Netherlands coast. But it's not. And it wasn't. The general trend is down but it wiggles up and down along the way of course. So, to our horror, whilst much of the remaining 50 km was downhill, some of it was not. And our legs did not like this.
It was hot as well. 33 degrees Celsius.
We're now on Eurovelo route EV15, The Rhine Route. We cycled near to a tributary of the Rhine today but not the Rhine itself. That will come later.
Some of the ride followed fast roads. Some of it was on nice gravel. Some was on horrendous coarse gravel, with stones so big it should not be called gravel. Maybe "stones" instead.
With the heat, this morning's climb and yesterday's climb all combined, today turned out to be pretty exhausting. We stopped for cold drinks at one point and this may have helped a little but we were both close to hallucinating by the time we found today's (very nice) campsite.
But we made it. And we have another climb under our belts to be proud of. Have I mentioned our bikes are really heavy? Well, they are :-)
Time to rest and eat. Tomorrow's another day!
