Self-Guided Walking Tour of Luxembourg City
Route So Far

Travelogue

M2 was keen to spend a day in Luxembourg, seeing whatever the sights are and so we scheduled a non-cycling day to allow that to happen. After the 69 mile ride of yesterday, our legs were quite happy to go along with the idea anyway.

We found a self-guided walking tour on the internet, and set off at about 10:00 this morning. Here are the highlights of our walk, with photos.

The Pfaffenthal Panoramic Lift

This was not part of the tour as such but it's just possible it was the highlight anyway!

Our apartment is in a neighbourhood called Pafendall which lies in a deep valley or gorge. Most of the city is about 70 metres above us and is either reached by road, which involves a lengthy uphill walk or bike ride, or by taking the wonderful Pfaffenthal Panoramic Lift. Per the name, it's a lift which affords panoramic views over the valley. It's a large lift as well and it's used by both pedestrians and cyclists with their bikes. Guess how we'll be leaving the valley when we get back on our bikes tomorrow!

Well, it was scary!

The lift is to the left and in front of the red bridge

Amazing Sculpture in the Park

There was an amazing sculpture in the park we walked through on the way to the start of the tour. M2 thought it a good idea to ruin it by positioning M1 in front of it and take a photo. Hopefully the effects were not lasting.

Place d'Armes

The tour officially started here, at the original town square.

Gëlle Fra (Monument of Remembrance)

This statue of a golden lady, perched upon a large obelisk is a "memorial is to the thousands of Luxembourgers who volunteered for service during the World Wars".

There's another valley beyond the memorial with a park which has a river flowing through it. There are some good views from just beyond the memorial and bridges across to the other side.

Clock Tower

The skyline on the opposite side of the valley contains an attractive clock tower which is actually part of the building used by a bank. We walked over using the pedestrian bridge that is under the Pont Adolphe, to take a closer look.

The view across the park in the valley from this side was also worth seeing.

Notre-Dame Cathedral

There's a cathedral and we paid it a visit.

Grand Ducal Palace

This is the Grand Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg's official residence. It's a desirable residence in the heart of the city. It has a Chinese restaurant and a cafe right opposite it. We have no doubt that the Grand Duke and Duchess are regular customers at both.

Chemin de la Corniche (Walls of the Corniche)

These are the old city walls, which are built into a rock face called the Bock. From the walls, you get a good view of the river Alzette and Neumünster Abbey.

Bakery

What better way to end a self-guided walking tour than to guide yourself on foot, to the nearest bakery? There is none of course, so that's what we did and enjoyed a coffee and a Nussecken

We walked back to our apartment, taking the panoramic lift down to our street and have no further plans for the day. The weather forecast for the next few days is truly awful, with heavy rain and strong, blustery winds so we're preparing mentally as well as physically for that!

Cheese of the day was La Vache Qui Rit or if you prefer, Laughing Cow :-) Yummy, spreadable triangles of cheese wrapped in foil. M1 was feeling classy this day!
